Why oil soap

Know what you’re
washing with.

The ingredients, the way it is made, the evidence, and the limits worth knowing.

From fatty acids
to a cake of soap.

BB is made from palm, palm-kernel and coconut fatty acids, saponified with caustic soda. Silicate of soda helps with oil removal; lemon perfume supplies the scent. The soap is cured for weeks before cutting, stamping and wrapping.

Total fatty matter

This is the accredited test result. BB guarantees a minimum of 50 per cent.

TFM describes composition. It does not, on its own, prove cleaning performance, skin mildness or environmental impact.

Most laundry in India is still done by hand; in 2024 about one household in five owned a washing machine. Here is where an oil soap still wins, and where it does not.

What a soap is

A soap is the salt of a fatty acid: an oil boiled with an alkali. Ours is palm, palm kernel and coconut oil saponified with caustic soda. A synthetic detergent is built on a petrochemical molecule, usually linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), made from benzene and a long-chain olefin, plus builders, fillers, enzymes, brighteners and perfume.

Where soap wins

It breaks down. The detergent industry’s own risk assessment of fatty-acid soaps found that their use “poses no concern in any environmental compartment”; the calcium soap formed in waste water is insoluble and not bioavailable. In a 2025 study using OECD methods, bar soap reached 87 per cent biodegradation in 28 days while the LAS-type surfactant tested showed none, though a soap maker part-funded the work. LAS degrades quickly where there is oxygen, but not in the anaerobic sludge of a sewage works.

Its builder is silicate of soda. The phosphate builders in many synthetic detergents are a different matter. An IISc report put India’s use of phosphate-containing laundry detergent at about 2.88 million tonnes a year, sending roughly 146,000 tonnes of phosphorus into its waters, the largest single source in municipal sewage; Bengaluru’s frothing lakes made that visible. A laundry soap must be phosphate-free to carry the BIS ECO Mark under IS 285.

It is a short list. Dermatologists tell families with eczema to choose fragrance-free, dye-free laundry products and to rinse well. True detergent allergy is rare, 0.7 per cent in a large patch-test study; residue irritation is the usual complaint. A cake leaves little behind, though ours has a lemon perfume and a pale colour, so it is not fragrance-free.

It is gentle on fibre. Woolmark says avoid enzyme “bio” detergents and never bleach wool; the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute warns against alkaline detergents and chlorine on wool, silk and nylon, and notes that optical brighteners break down in light to leave yellow patches. BB Soap is a plain soap: vegetable oils, caustic soda, silicate of soda and lemon perfume.

It is used to the last sliver, and it needs no scoop.

Where it does not

Hard water. Soap binds calcium and precipitates as scum; hard water needs more soap and can leave a film on fabric. India’s drinking-water standard accepts hardness up to 200 mg/l and permits 600; much borewell water sits in that range. Synthetic detergents were made to shrug off those ions. BB Soap’s silicate helps, as builders are meant to in hard-water areas, but it does not abolish scum.

Front-loaders. Whirlpool tells owners of its front-load machines to use only high-efficiency (HE) detergent; anything else brings excess suds, longer cycles, poor rinsing and leaks. Grated soap foams, so pre-treat with the cake and let the machine’s detergent run the cycle.

Cold-water stains. Enzymes in modern powders digest protein and starch at low temperature; a soap relies on rubbing, soaking and time.

Cloth-nappy inserts. Nappy communities advise detergent, not soap, because residue builds up in absorbent layers, worse in hard water.

A true soap is mildly alkaline, as are nearly all Indian laundry products; keep silk and wool washes short and cool.

Who still chooses a cake

Silk and wool at home

Woolmark asks for a mild, neutral detergent with no enzymes and no bleach; a Silk Mark member retailer advises soft lukewarm water and a neutral soap, with the garment dried flat in shade.

Khadi and handloom

The Ministry of Textiles’ India Handmade guide says cold water, a mild detergent, a salt soak before the first wash and drying in shade.

Ring around the collar

Laundry bars are sold for exactly this: wet the mark, rub the bar in, wait a minute, wash. Unilever’s guide for its own bar says the same for shirt cuffs and collars.

Baby clothes

Dermatology guidance is fragrance-free, dye-free and an extra rinse. A cake is a short list, but ours has a lemon perfume, so rinse well and keep it off nappy inserts.

Institutional laundries

In July 2026 the Indian Air Force tendered on GeM for 7,440 laundry soaps conforming to IS 285, the Indian laundry-soap standard.

Rural and water-scarce households

A five-country field study found hand washing with small bars from the local shop to be the norm; women in rural Odisha prefer a river for laundry because iron-rich tubewell water stains cloth.

Plant-preference communities

BB Soap uses only palm, palm kernel and coconut oil. Followers of a Jain muni wrote to ask us for a dealer in Ahmedabad.

Six ways to get the best from a cake

  1. Wet cloth and cake, and rub the cake on the cloth; keep the cake out of the water between uses so it stays firm.
  2. Collars, cuffs, socks: rub the wet cake in, leave it five minutes, then wash.
  3. Semi-automatic or top-loader: grate a sliver, dissolve it in a mug of hot water and add it to the tub; start with less than you think.
  4. Front-loader: pre-treat with the cake, then run the cycle on the machine’s low-suds detergent.
  5. Hard water: dissolve the soap first, use rainwater or softened water if you have it, and rinse twice. A spoon of washing soda softens the water; BIS lists soda ash among soap builders.
  6. Silk, wool, khadi: cool water, a short wash, no wringing, dry flat in shade.
